Mott Projects is pleased to present narcissistic tendencies, a solo exhibition by London based artist Hetty Douglas. This is Douglas’s first exhibition at Mott Projects. Join us for an opening reception on Friday, August 2nd, from 6-8 pm.
The paintings for narcissistic tendencies were created during pivotal moments of both erosion and expansion in Douglas’s life. Needing to unleash the things that need to be said, Douglas transforms silence into a powerful tool for cleansing and rebuilding. Her paintings serve as a medium for releasing stored words and self-sabotaging narratives, offering a raw and honest exploration of her inner self.
Douglas’s approach to art is both introspective and universally resonant. She bridges abstract painting with deeply personal narratives, creating a gateway into the complexities of human reaction and emotion. Her work invites viewers to contemplate their own inner conflicts and journeys, and helps offer a way toward self-acceptance and healing. Each painting stands as a testament to Douglas’s ability to turn exhausted lies into heartfelt storytelling, encouraging a profound connection with those around her.
A poignant line from Gillian Welch encapsulates the essence of the exhibition: “but of all the little ways I’ve found to hurt myself, well you might be my favourite one of all.”
Hetty Douglas (b. 1992, Sheffield GB) is a self taught lesbian artist, working predominantly in painting. Taking inspiration from her self-proclaimed complex childhood, Hetty creates work that explores the complexities and dark shadows of individual identity without fear of diving inward. Her inquiries are both introspective and a universal reflection on reconciling our inner worlds and wounds, often with a sexual or intensely personal twist. This is her first exhibition at Mott Projects.
